My Review Of A Foolish Plucking By Dee Wilbur

http://fireandicebooktours.wordpress.com/2014/04/03/mystery-book-tour-giveaway-a-foolish-plucking-by-dee-wilbur-5114-53014/

Virtual Book Tour Dates: 5/1/14 – 5/30/14

Genres: Mystery, Cozy Mystery

Blurb:

In their book, A Foolish Plucking, Dee Pipes and Charlie Yates, writing as Dee Wilbur, are again telling the truth about Richmond, Texas (as well as a few lies). They’ve expanded Jon Miller’s area of operations to include Liberty, Texas, Dee’s home town. She demanded equal time with Richmond so much of the story is centered in Liberty. But not to limit themselves, they’ve also had some of the story take place in Victoria, Texas. You can’t confine a great man like Jon Miller.

–It’s all fun and games ‘til someone gets a conviction–

Gary is a lush and a womanizer. On that everyone agrees. But is he a murderer? The police sure think so. Gary denies it, and the police don’t have a corpse. But they do have the big fight at the country club, his wife’s blood behind the bed, in the shower drain, and in the back of her Escalade, and Gary’s lack of an alibi. The jury agrees with the police.

Gary’s mistress leaves Dayton with Gary’s child and moves to Richmond, to be nearby for her once a month visits with him in the Vance Unit (a Texas State Prison in Sugar Land). She hears of Jon through Lulu, her new boss, and enlists his aid in trying to get Gary a new trial.

In the meantime Jon and Sandy are dealing with a family problem. Why haven’t Jon’s brother and sister-in-law ever shown up at any of their events. It isn’t because Sandy’s cooking is bad.

All in all it stirs up a nice little brew of a mystery that’ll keep you busy for an afternoon or two.

My review of A Foolish Plucking. Five stars. Jon helps Gary with his appeal and unravels a mystery. Jon and Sandy are thrown into a family crisis with Jon's brother Dean. They thought they got that worked out, but ... A surprise ending. Thank you for a good read.

Excerpt:

Valentine’s Day was the holiday of pink hearts, red roses, lace, gold, diamonds, and love. The organizers of the Pecan Hill Country Club had transformed the dining room into a dreamlike fa├žade with tables for individual couples. The tables were draped in lace, garnished with red heart confetti, and lit by votives. The tables scattered about the periphery of the room revealed a central dance floor with several couples slow dancing. The D.J. watched as the couples returned to their tables. Many gathered up their coats, purses, and party favors to move toward the exit. The party was winding down. Heads swiveled as one irate husband stomped to the floor to drag his wife back to their table.
What in the hell are you doing?” Gary spat the words out through clenched teeth as he pulled her from the dance floor.
What do you think you’re doing?” Alice answered, rubbing her left wrist where he had grabbed her, and glancing around to see if anyone was watching.
He pushed her into a chair at their table. “I’m trying to keep you from making a complete spectacle of yourself.” His voice rose loud enough to be heard over the music that the D.J. had started. Other patrons at the Pecan Hill Country Club Valentine Dance turned to stare at the shouting couple, always eager to watch a good fight.
Rubbing your boobs all over Franklin Johns out there on the dance floor.”
You’ve had too much to drink. You’re so drunk you can barely stand upright. I sure can’t dance with you. I’m going home. You might think about where you plan to sleep tonight ’cause it sure ain’t anywhere near me.” With that Alice picked up her stole and strode across the dance floor and out of the room.
Gary slumped into his chair and finished off his drink. He pondered his situation for a few minutes and then staggered to the front door of the club just in time to see Alice speed off in her Escalade. “Shit, I think I need another drink,” he said as he slid to the floor, ending up with his head resting against the door frame.
An elderly, white-haired couple, leaving for the evening, gingerly stepped over his legs and continued to the parking lot. The woman glanced back.
There he is again. I don’t know how poor little Alice puts up with him. And it’s her daddy’s money, bless her heart.”
Her husband, a municipal court judge for the city of Liberty, answered,
Wouldn’t take that much for him to have his own money, if he just sobered up and worked, instead of playing.”
Emma, his wife, said, “I’m going to call Thelma, Alice’s mother, and tell her. This is disgraceful.”
About two hours later, Gary awoke lying on the couch in the men’s locker room, cold water running down his chin.
A voice which said, “Come on, wake up. It’s time for all good little boys to go home,” and a wet face brought him to semi-consciousness.
Fred, what have you done to me? Why am I all wet?”
Fred, the men’s locker room attendant and general custodian, leaned over Gary and said “Mr. Spencer, you been asleep for two hours. Cold water in the face was my last choice ’fore I threw you in the shower. We’re closing the place down for the night. I’ve called you a taxi, and it’s here. So up you go.”
He lifted the man from the couch and drunk-walked him to the waiting cab.

Saying Goodbye By Mahima Martel Blog Tour

SayingGoodbye2amazon 3d

Virtual Book Tour Dates: 5/13/14 – 5/27/14
Genre: Literary Fiction

Blurb:
What is love? Is it a possession, something to confine and put on display? Is it declarations for the whole world to hear, or is it a precious space within the heart?
After a tragic event in which agents and parents keep them apart, Frankie and Alex maintain a long distance love affair throughout the turbulent Sixties, away from the prying eyes of the press and the fans. Separated, their love breeds strength to overcome obstacles that once held them down. Individually, they blossom creatively and their talents soar to new heights. Within the secrecy of their relationship, they learn greater lessons of love, lessons not defined by society, but by the heart and the soul.
A true lover knows what the other needs and will often make great personal sacrifices for the well-being of their lover. Sometimes the strength of love is being able to say goodbye.

Excerpt:
Frankie couldn’t help it; she was so excited to be alone with him. “So, how was your incredible and inspiring trip?”
Alex sat down across the table from her with a bowl of fruit loops and a cup of tea. “Where to start? Australia was out of this world. Heard some incredible Aborigine music, and then a mad Aussie got me wasted. India was a spiritual hell hole, and I spent most of my time with the chattiest of Hindus, but a real nice fellow. South Africa, my guide, Cebo, was a crazier driver than you.”
“Crazier than you?” Frankie asked with a smirk.
“Crazier than you,” Alex restated strongly and laughed. “I jammed with a Zulu band, and they gave me the name Luyanda.”
“Sounds like a girl’s name,” said Frankie.
“Shut up. It’s very manly. It means love to grow,” he said.
Frankie looked at Alex curiously. “Love to grow? Your love is still growing?”
“Yes, apparently I am blossoming, like a budding flower,” he said with a smile and batting of his eye lashes.
“Girl,” teased Frankie.
Alex playfully kicked Frankie under the table. “Smarty,” he said and munched on a heaping spoonful of Fruit Loops. “Peru was a bit sad.”
“Why was Peru sad?” questioned Frankie with a mouthful of cornflakes.
“I saw this young man play guitar. He reminded me of myself years ago, but untouched and not jaded. His soul and his playing were pure. Not only have I lost that, I’m afraid I never had that. It made me think my entire life has been a waste.” He gazed at Frankie. “What do you see when you see meplay?”
Frankie sat back in her chair, thought for a moment and said, “Myself.”
The answer stunned Alex. “You see you?”
Curling her knees to her chest Frankie rocked forward. “Yes. I see you in me. I feel you in me. I feel your nervousness and anxiety. I feel what you play. It touches me, and I understand it all.” She could tell by Alex’s expression that her words made an impact, and she continued. “Alex, you‘re very talented. You need to start believing in yourself. You have traveled the world to discover music, but you don’t realize music has been inside you the whole time.”
Alex laughed. “Leave it to Frankie Freud to figure me out.”
“I’m going to start charging you,” she teased.
“Well, in that case, I do have a present for you.” said Alex and reached for his bag. “Check this out.” He pulled out the boomerang clappers and slapped them together. “Boomerangs as musical instrument, cool ‘eh?”
Frankie leaped from her seat and grabbed the boomerangs from his hands. “Wow! Are these for me?” she asked excitedly and danced around the kitchen wildly clapping the boomerangs.
Alex tugged the boomerangs from her hands. “No, they’re for me.”
“So I don’t get boomerang clappers,” she said with a pout.
“No, I have something else for you,” he said sternly.
He pulled out two jewelry boxes and rattled them both to hear the contents of what was inside. “Here, this is for you,” he said handing Frankie one of the boxes.
“Who is the other one for?” she asked.
“Sarah,” Alex replied flatly.
Frankie didn’t respond; she suspected the answer. She carefully unwrapped the paper and unfolded the tissue paper to find a beaded design hanging from a safety pin like ribbon. She glanced at Alex curiously.
“It is a Zulu love letter. I made it for you on the plane to Peru, spilled beads all over the cabin floor. Anyway, the bead colors tell the story of love,” explained Alex.
“What does it say?” asked Frankie.
Alex patted his lap and Frankie joined him. He pointed to each bead and explained, “The black beads mean heartache, the turquoise means I lose hope you will marry me, the red means longing and the green is jealousy.”
“Doesn’t sound like such a nice love letter,” said Frankie.
“But you see it’s all surrounded by the white beads that mean hope and the brown beads is like giving new life,” explained Alex. He put his arm around her waist. “The letter as a whole reads, despite all the heartache, impatience, longing and jealousy. I have hope that we will have a new life together.”

Lesser Known Facts About the Book:
- There is a very strong / intense story of love that is present throughout the book.

Was worried that I could get rejected at the mention / sight of the name of the book itself!

D. Robert PeaseD. Robert Pease has been interested in creating worlds since childhood. From building in the sandbox behind his house, to drawing fantastical worlds with paper and pencil, there has hardly been a time he hasn't been off on some adventure in his mind, to the dismay of parents and teachers alike. Also, since the moment he could read, books have consumed vast swaths of his life. From The Mouse and the Motorcycle, to The Lord of the Rings, worlds just beyond reality have called to him like Homer's Sirens. It's not surprising then he chose to write stories of his own.  My review: I give this five stars. I really enjoyed it. It reminds me of C. S. Lewis book where you find hidden meaning in the story. Four kids gather to find the Guardians and save the world. Along the way they learn about themselves. Entertaining. Great characters and adventure. Thanks for a good read.

The Buzz

"This was one of the most entertaining reads for the whole family we have found in a long time. The characters are very believable, and I am always a sucker for heroes that have to find their way. The reading is very fluid and easily understood by the little kids when read aloud (sounds silly but anyone trying to do this will tell you it's not as easy a thing to achieve as it sounds) and the kids all seem to enjoy the story. The history is easily accessible even without a lot of research or background knowledge. The kids are very motivated to research and learn more on their own because this story has captured their interest. I already have many home learning lessons in mind using this book and have begun developing them with my kids. I think this is a book that will be found in classrooms very soon! Great job! I'm looking forward to more soon!!!" ~ 5 Star Review, Mariah W., Amazon
"Excellent read in and of itself, and provides excellent, character-building source material for reading to youngsters. The characters are well written and realistic, and the storyline is cleverly written and intelligent." ~ 5 Star Review, Alia K., Amazon
"Fantastic read. I loved the characters in this book so much that I re-read to my 9 year old after finishing it. I highly recommend this book for anyone that likes stories about adventure and believing in yourself." ~ 5 Star Review, Keith, Amazon

My review. I give this book five stars. I really loved it. Super characters. Entertaining. These kids train to become the Gumshoe News Crew and solve a mystery. Melissa Perry Moraja can even make bird poop interesting, which I'm sure will appeal to most kids. Good read. Thanks.

Starlight By K C Sprayberry Release Day Blitz

What happened to Tawni Barclay?
The first thing Brad Patterson noticed as he skidded into the Starlight Resort was a teenage girl hanging from the elm tree near the entrance. A shudder ran through him. This scene bore an eerie resemblance to a local legend of three girls who had killed themselves forty years ago. No official records existed to prove those three deaths happened. All he'd been able to uncover were three missing person cases involving three teenage girls who had never been found.
“Where are you, Jayme?”
Jayme Barclay sees her 15 year old swinging on a rope from a tree at Starlight, the mansion the county commissioner is making over. Brad Patterson loses a piece of himself when he answers the 911 call to get to Starlight on a snowy December night. A year later, the mystery surrounding Tawni's "suicide" still haunts both Jayme and Brad. Events spiral until Jayme must return from her isolation and face her demons. After reuniting with Brad, she reveals a secret she hid from him. They work with Tawni's friends to uncover the activities at Starlight and rescue another teen before she kills herself.
